Model Home Construction

An example in sustainable design and construction of buildings for local communities, companies and other entities alike, this is a model home. The goal is to aware people to use environmentally friendly products like compressed earth mud instead of cement and other products that constitute a heavy carbon footprint and to build sustainable houses. We have used and renovated old, dilapidated materials like wood, glass, cloths to make beautiful and usable furniture in the home. Re-using old materials teaches us to be resourceful and efficient with scarce resources and helps protect the resources of the planet.

Rebuilding houses in Gundu and Bungamati

On 25th April 2015, Nepal was hit by an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was located in Gorkha, approximately 200km Northwest from Kathmandu. It killed more than 9,000 people and injured more than 23,000.

Our team in The Explore Nepal worked with our team and the community outside Bhaktapur in Gundu to build transition homes. We consulted with local community and gave priorities to household with single mothers, or household were the male members were working abroad. We built 80 houses in Gundu; 50 houses in Bungamati and a beautiful school in Khokhana.

We also helped build a primary school in Khokana once we saw that the children were still being taught in the building that was stated as “unsafe” after building visits from the National Engineering Department. We got volunteers help us and we have a beautiful light structured building for the children.
